How do you describe a city in which the light shimmers golden off ancient walls and gardens are filled with flowers and statues by Michelangelo? Words can't do it justice.
Florence, or Firenze as they call it in Italy, is spectacular. With thousands of years of history steeped in its stones, it is a city of great beauty that at times can be overwhelming to comprehend.
We visited on a Sunday and began with a stroll through the piazza outside the Uffizi Gallery, where artists line the cobblestones with easels and paintings. Art is everywhere in this city, indoors and out.
Just a short walk away to the Loggia del Lanzi Piazza della Signoria and you come across your first glimpse of incredible sculptures in the open air for everyone to enjoy. One of my favorites was Benvenuto Cellini's Perseus Holding the Head of Medusa.
Nearby, at the entrance and side of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi stand more than a dozen grand sculptures, each more beautiful than the next.
With so much beauty in their midst, how do the Fiorentini ever concentrate?
