Every morning and every evening, I get to know my city of Modena and its people a little more. The dogs and I take a long walk along Viale delle Rimembrenze through the quiet green of the parco near my home.
At one end of the quiet park, a closed up compound of the Italian military - the Caserma Giuseppe Garibaldi - sits as a reminder of how times change. Pigeons roost in the barred windows as the plaster continues to age and weather the intense heat of the Italian sunshine.
Built more than a thousand years ago, Modena's culture and history are apparent everywhere, with statuary in every part of the city. Here a statue of a soldier, minus his left arm, stands sentinel in the park.
